Preface
We are a ten-man raiding guild. As stated on the post about us, we are more interested in the people and experiences we have rather than loot. However, we do ask for certain things in our raids to keep them running smoothly and make them enjoyable for everybody involved, including any PUGS new friends.
Requirements for Raiding
The following addons are required for raiding:
Deadly Boss Mods (or equivalent, such as Big Wigs Bossmods)
A threat meter (the in-game equivalent is fine, so long as it is activated)
A must is also Ventrilo. If you are not running Ventrilo, you will not be invited to the raid. Microphones are very important, though not necessarily required. A good microphone can be bought cheap at any computer or electronic store. If you plan on running heroic-mode content, a microphone is required.
The last requirement one must meet for raiding is to be gemmed and enchanted to the best of their ability. There are many jewelcrafters and enchanters in guild, so please make use of them. Remember, however, they are not there for free hand outs. Please compensate by tips or providing the materials. For more information on gemming and enchanting, please see the section below. Also note, that if you do not meet these requirements, your toon will not be promoted to the "Raider" rank and will not be invited to raids.
Raid Leaders
Right now, Chestnut (with a side of Chaide) is the guild's primary raid leader and event coordinator. Raid leaders determine who comes along if we have more than ten people accept, handle loot disputes if they pop up (not that we have many in our guild), assign recipe drops, and determine which drops will be guild resources (e.g.: greens go to a max enchanter to use for enchanting the new gear we get every week).
Loot Rules
General Raids, and PUG Raids
The loot rules for Shade of the Elm are pretty simple. Since we're more worried about the players than the loot, we do Main Spec rolls, followed by Off Spec rolls (if there is no need for MS), and lastly, Greed Rolls (if there are no MS/OS rolls or a disenchanter). There are some stipulations to this simple system:
1. If you've already won an item for main spec, please pass on items others can use. Feel free to roll, but you will be asked to pass if you have already won something and other people roll (if nobody else rolls, congratulations, you got a second upgrade!).
2. If you have two specs you use, the spec you are using for the raid will be your main spec rolls. For instance, Chef has been healing lately, and decides to tank one night because another healer has logged on. Chef would roll on tank gear for his main spec that night, and heals as his off spec. The only stipulation to this rule is if you are using both specs continually throughout the raid. If this happens, you will claim your main spec at the start of the raid. OS rolls will be for the unclaimed spec.
The Defenders
In our Defenders (progression) group, we are utilizing a loot council system. Those interested in the loot drops will send a tell to the Loot Master when prompted, and the loot council will discuss how the loot will be handed out. If there is a similar need amongst multiple people, a roll may be initiated, otherwise, loot will be distributed as the loot council deems fit. Items taken into account include: role within the raid (tank, healer, dps); previous loot won; set bonus for tier pieces; etc.
Gear and Enchants
Gear
We know that a lot of people are still working on gear, and we're here to help with that. However, please make sure your gear matches the content we are running. To check your gear for content, head over to www.wow-heroes.com. If your progress bar is yellow or green for the instance we plan on running, you're good to go!
A note on PVP gear: While PVP gear is sometimes a good option while you are working your way into T11 content and through dungeons (boosting item level, better than a green, etc.), it is not acceptable to wear PVP gear in a progression raid. Replace those pieces right after your greens, please!
Enchants/Gems
Please make sure your gear is enchanted and gemmed. There are plenty of resources to tell you what enchants are best for your class and spec. Some of these are as follows:
1. www.wow-heroes.com (will give you enchant suggestions)
2. Elitist Jerks Forums
Performance and Ability
Abilities
Learn your abilities. Know how to maximize them and what abilities are best when. ElitistJerks is a great resource, as are 101 guides, and any blogs you come across dedicated to your class (they're out there). You don't have to be pushing 40k DPS to run with us, but do know your class.
Performance
We are only requiring a Boss Mod and Threat meter at the moment, but we like it when people have some of the following as well:
1. Deadly Boss Mods: This tells you what's going on in the fights. Who has bone spikes, when the blood beasts spawn, and more. Most of our raiders run with this addon, and we highly recommend it. It helps you keep up your raid awareness as well. (Big Wigs works as well, but most members are using Deadly Boss Mods)
2. Threat Meters: The in-game system has a "threat meter", and this suffices for most players. Others like to download Omen or the Recount addon for threat. Whichever one you use, they're all very important in a raid setting.
3. DPS/Heal Meters: A recount addon, such as, well, Recount, is a great addon that will give you a good chunk of information about what went on. Recount can provide you with items such as: damage taken, healing done, DPS, deaths, rezes, etc. And can specify for overall or the current (or most recent 5) fight(s).
Also, know the fights. YouTube is your friend. You can search for TankSpot 10 man videos of the content (which is what the raid leaders use--don't worry, they're not just for tanks!) , use Learn2Raid (http://www.learntoraid.com/) or just a how-to on the boss.
A Note on Logs
We at Shade of the Elm try to log all of our current content raids, whether they be a "fun run" or progression. Chaide and Chestnut are hoping to work on a "how to read logs" walkthrough, but in the meantime, you can find our logs at: www.worldoflogs.com/guilds/126219/
The Raid
We ask you be courteous on vent. We don't mind if you shoot the breeze some, or joke around a bit, but realize this is a raid, and we need to focus. The raid leader will always do a quick recap of the boss as we get to them and assign roles for various parts of the puzzle if needed, so make sure that Vent is clear at that time. We like to talk and keep vent lively and fun, but we try to focus when it comes time. Please be able to make this distinction.
On Consumables
In the Elm, we try to utilizeLobster Baskets Fish Feasts and Flask Cauldrons throughout the raids. However, it is wise to carry a stack or two of your best food with you along with a flask or two for raid nights. There is no guarantee that you will have an Alchemist or Maximum Level Chef (no pun intended) in your raid.
Raiding Dues (A Note on Consumables)
Because we try to provide progression raiders with Cauldrons and Feasts, we ask that you deposit one of the following into the Raiding tab (or mail it to an officer to make sure it is noted):
This isn't asking a lot, especially considering we will be using the cauldron system, and your flasks will be provided for you. The gold, and the raid food will help to make sure that we always have both on hand for you, when you need it. When that awesome two handed weapon drops for you in Firelands, you will probably want an enchant for it. We want to be able to continue to enchant, gem, and provide for our raiders.
Guild bank repairs were never something that was intended to be used by the entire guild 100% of the time to repair out of. They will be turned on for raiders during raid times. We don't believe in having our raiders pay for their repairs, however we can't afford to cover every 5 man repair cost.
As always - the food and the mats in the raiding tab are just for raiding. You should never take anything out of the tab unless you need it for the raid. Everyone should be using (and contributing) to our raid food. Treat every item you take from the raiding tab with respect. It took someone's time and energy to make or farm that item, they are not to be hoarded - only take what you need.
Formation
The raid leader will log on approximately 15 minutes prior to raid to get things set up. Raid invites will start 5 minutes prior to/after the listed raid time. 15 minutes will be provided after the listed raid time for "stragglers" that are just getting out of work, etc. If you're not on in that time, we'll fill your spot so we can get started.
Before heading out to the raid, ask yourself these questions:
1. Am I repaired? (Yes>Head on out. No>Repair.)
2. Do I have reagents? (Yes>Head on out. No>Buy them.)
3. Is there a mage in raid? (Yes>They will drop a table. No>I may need to pick up some food and/or water.)
4. Do I have my consumables? (Yes>Head on out. No>Buy or make them.)
5. Do I have enough gold for a possible "bad" night? (Yes>Head on out. No>Get some; send some over from another toon, do dailies, etc.)
6. Can I give this 100%? (Yes>Head on out. No>Let the raid leader know you can't make it for the night and go take care of what you need to do. Remember, real life comes first.)
Conclusion
We call ourselves a "semi-casual" guild--but that doesn't mean we suck! We ask that you come prepared. That means knowing the fights, being on top of your enchants/gems, and having all the raid buffs you need. Be ready to bring your A-Game. Remember, we're a "semi-casual" guild, not a "crappy semi-casual" guild. These "rules" are here for the courtesy and respect of your fellow raid members. They are here to level the playing field, and make you a better team player.
